Repertoire

The Anila Sinha Foundation exists to bring the finest exponents of Indian performance to America, to cultivate cross-cultural understanding, and to perpetuate the performing arts of Northern India. The Foundation has established the Academy of Kathak Dance and Music, Kathak Nrityakala Kendra, which has rapidly flourished through professional performances, workshops, lecture/demonstrations, and dance and music courses and examinations. With a repertoire of items evolved from mythological stories as well as abstract interpretations choreographed by Artistic Director Sandhya Desai and composed by Music Director Atul Desai, Kathak Nrityakala Kendra has performed at venues such as the Chicago Cultural Center, Navy Pier Children's Museum, University of Wisconsin, Northern Illinois University, and the University of Chicago.

Program Description:

"COSMOS TO KATHAK" - Depicts cosmic energy through movement. Energy creates balance in the universe.

"TARANA" - Product of artistic fusion of Indo-Persian culture. Features exquisite geometrical designs, pirouettes and intricate footwork.

"KRISHNA LEELA" - Scenes from the life of Lord Krishna.

"RAMAYANA" - Story of Lord Rama, as told in the epic poem of the same name. A story of moral values and the ultimate victory of good over evil.

"DASHA AVATAR" - Ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Depicts the evolution of mankind.

"SOUNDSCAPE" - Abstract interpretation of the mind and body's reaction to sound, music and rythm.

"YUGAL" - Romantic duet in which synchronized movements create the illusion of oneness without any body contact.

"SANCHARI" : In this item there are two different lyrics composed to music, one is a romantic episode of a Gopi's complaint of Krishna teasing her; the other is Holi, a festival of color in which all partake equally in a mood of joy celebrating and welcoming the season of spring.

"SUVERNA" : This composition in Kathak dance combines its various elements of the physical structure "Nritt" and rhythmic cirtuosity to create an eloquent flow of kinesis. Beginning in a slow tempo with lyrical movements, progressing towards a faster rhythm and linear forms and culminating in the fast and unique foot-work of Kathak dance. A group of dancers continuously weave patterns in dance, decorating the space with movements and rhythms and bringing a sense of precision and beauty amongst themselves and in their audience.

"KHOJ"- This is the students first attempt at coming together to experience each other's space, energy and strength. It is an initial exercise which would later lead to a process of choreography.

"AARAMBH" : This dance number literally means "the beginning" shows the initial training exercises of the Kathak dance and how the student gradually transforms into a dancer.
